1. Learn the Lingo

When it comes to selecting quality environmentally friendly papers, it helps to know abbreviations and a little industry jargon. Here a just a few expressions you may come across:

  • PCW(post-consumer waste) content: Waste recovered after it's consumption and then recycled (like out of your paper recycling bin)
  • PCF(processed chlorine free): PCF papers have not been rebleached with chlorine containing compounds.
  • TCF (totally chlorine free): No chlorine was used on virgin fibers or recycled paper. Virgin components need to be certified as total chlorine free.
  • ECF (elemental chlorine free): ECF papers are produced from pulp that has been bleached with a chlorine derivative such as chlorine dioxide.
  • VOC's (Volatile organic compounds, such as occur in petroleum based printing ink)
  • Virgin fiber: 100% pure fiber from an original source
  • Eco-audits: New Leaf paper offers environmental benefit statements for your print job
  • FSC: Forrest Stewardship Council is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests.

2. Recycled Papers Preserve & Conserve

Not every printer defines "Green Printing" the same way! Angel Printing, Inc. made our environmental commitment in 2006. Since then we have been putting a wide range of eco-friendly practices, materials and chemical free substances into place! As an experienced GREEN PRINTER, we are dedicated to staying informed about new eco-friendly business solutions and provide in-depth expertise.

Angel Printing's clients benefit from the fact that we offer high quality papers with high post-consumer recycled content, non-chlorine-bleached from New Leaf Paper, and Mohawk Paper, two of the leading environmental paper companies. New Leaf offers an ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS STATEMENT that can be added to our customer's print design detailing the water, energy, and emissions saved for a given print job.

3. Ink: Soy far, Soy Good!

Soy based inks, made from soybeans, have replaced conventional petroleum-based inks in almost every printing company several year sago because it is available in brighter colors and makes paper recycling (especially the de-inking of paper) easier. Our digital machines use powdered toners that are vegetable based with a vegetable based wax as a fuser. Always be sure to inquire about the toners and inks a printing company uses, not all digital presses use powdered, vegetable based toners and not all offset presses use soy based ink although it is becoming the norm.

4. Tree free papers

Stone Paper, also known as Rock Paper, is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to help conserve one of our earth’s valuable carbon storing resources--TREES, because it is a completely tree free paper ie. a paper made of stone! Angel Printing is launching several new products that are suitable to print on stone paper this month! Please inquire with us for more detailed information.

Cotton, Hemp, Tyvek & Corn as paper alternatives
We also print on hemp paper, cotton bond stocks, synthetic stocks, canvas and Tyvek. Promotional products made from
corn are the best tree-free solution, often even compostable!

5. Bleach/Chlorine

There are four main bleaching solutions. Read under "learn the lingo" how TCF followed by PCF are much more environmentally friendly than standard bleaching or elemental chlorine.

6. The Digital (Green) Age

Digital printing has evolved over the past decade to offer high quality printing results, vibrant colors, crisp images and fast turn-around. On top of that various digital presses use vegetable based inks; we selected our equipment carefully to guarantee environmental benefits! For larger print quantities the much faster offset press with soy-based inks on recycled or stone papers is your best green choice. For your short to medium print runs, we recommend digital printing as it lowers waste by reducing setup materials considerably.
